Thanks those links helped me out.

I'm wondering if it's possible to do something like this on the
clients:
If /usr/local/firefox-3.0.3 does not exist,  copy tar file from the
server and run a script.

or something similar would be:
if adobe reader is not at a particular version, copy tar file from the
server and run the installer
