Hi Martin,

Flo Tools, from practically day one, had the capability of announcing track
selection while navigating with Control P and Semicolon. That was a function of
a keyboard shortcut triggering a macro to speak selected tracks. Unfortunately,
when Avid natively added the automatic speaking of tracks, it was not done in
as comprehensive a way as Flo Tools and, coincidentally, caused VoiceOver to
stutter. We've since removed the functionality from the Flo Tools side.
Monitoring track selection on a constant basis is something Flo Tools can
conceivably do and we even had a proof-of-concept script that could speak
volume and pan levels on the fly as you touched those controls on a surface.
The problem was that Flo Tools, not yet being a stand-alone application, could
not communicate with Pro Tools directly to know which tracks are shown or
hidden at any given point. Avid's implementation of the automatic speaking of
tracks was an attempt to pave the way for the type of functionality you're
describing. It would affect a relatively small portion of the user base and,
unless done well, could potantially lead to a situation where user preferences
on verbosity and such could only be controlled by Avid. Personally, I feel that
it's not Avid's responsibility to deal with accessibility on that level. It's
an incredibly slippery slope. There are others who will vehemently disagree. As
with anything related to accessibility, there are strong feelings in every
direction. The preferences of novice users are not the preferences of
professionals and even professionals will vary in opinion as to what works and
what doesn't.

To me, the only solution that truly makes sense in the long run is to have an
open-source, third party application tied to Pro Tools directly through Eucon.
Avid shouldn't be responsible for accessibility behavior but rather making
their UI hook into the Accessibility API and let an open-source community
define behavior.

Anyway, just some thoughts.

Slau
