I'll cast my vote for Big Brother as well.  We use it for Linux(RH 7.3, and 8.0), Solaris, and Windoze.  It's highly customizable and the folks that wrote it are always on the list.  There are also a ton of extensions available for free as well.  Check out www.deadcat.net and www.bb4.com.

We use Big Brother to great effect.  There is a memory leakage issue with BB 1.9c and RH9 though.  It uses a client server model to serve up a series of checks to a web server which can then be monitored.  It also sends email notifications.  It is also free to use for public sector.
