Hi, I am not sure about how OpenLdap works, but perhaps you should try creating the user account and home directory manually by using the command "useradd -m [loginname]" prior to setting up or dealing with the OpenLdap.
Unless this issue only happens with a few acccounts, you should check the permissions ( particularly the execute permission ) on the directory '/home' itself. Just a feeble suggestion.
