kernel panic after kernel upgrade

I decided I shouldn't ignore the blinky exclamation point any more, and 
fired up up2grade. It upgraded the kernel to 2.4.18-27.8.0, among other 
things, and I rebooted...

...only to get a kernel panic, complaining about not being able to mount 
the root fs.

If I choose to boot from the previous kernel, 2.4.18-26.8.0, all is well.

Where should I start looking to correct the problem?  All advice and 
pointers to FMs to R are welcome. (If the advice is "register with RHN 
and get RH 9," I'll need to wait until I find out how horribly the IRS 
is going to hit me. :))
