Seem to remember that XP might use the CPU to create a digital version
of the sound, and then play that through the soundcard. Somewhere in the
options of media-player I believe there is an option to use digital
playback -or regular analogue.

Traditionally, CD's use a cable running out back of the cd-drive
(usually analogue) to the soundcard- that way the CPU is producing a
digital copy of the sound... You should have three leads coming out the
back of your CD-drive, one going to the sound card, one to the
motherboard and one for power.
