Gnome panel abort as root

When RH8.0 is started as root, if I click on the applications on the 
application bar (that suddenly moved from the bottom of the screen to 
the far left..) i get the following message:
application gnome-panel (processo xxx) is terminated (aborted)

And if I click a second time xxx (that is a number) increases.
Of course as user there everything works great.
Any suggestion???
