-- the daemon isn't running -- the daemon isn't configured correctly -- there is a local (or network) firewall blocking access to port 53 -- the ACL configuration in named.conf prevents public access for answering such requests -- etc etc etc There are some excellent docs that come with bind, and its web site has a good FAQ.
