I had a very similar problem, all forms of smb: or smb:/// or whatever
resulted in a similar error message (whereas the full name or ip address
worked, as in your example). So I analysed my iptables logs and found
that I wasn't quite accepting all the correct ports. I opened some more
and it worked. So check your firewall.
