To configure netfilter firewalling try Shorewall:

For vpn you will probably want Ipsec or PPTP.

http://www.poptop.org/

I've nver used poptop but the IPSEC works well between Linux boxes and 
between Linux and Checkpoint.  I've read that it works Windows to 
Linux.
