That's probably the culprit. When there's an mbox file in your homedir 
and you use pine to read your e-mail, the mails are moved over from out 
of your /var/spool/mail/what-ever to the mbox file. Removing the mbox 
file usually also stops this behaviour. If there are any mails you want 
to keep in there, then of course move them over to another folder or 
even back into your mailspool.
