Thanks for everyone who helped! these changes (mainly the LANG setting) to the /etc/sysconfig/i18n file fixed most of the problems.
#LANG="en_US.UTF-8" LANG="en_US" SUPPORTED="en_US.UTF-8:en_US:en" #SYSFONT="latarcyrheb-sun16" SYSFONT="lat0-sun16" I noticed that ncurses and ansis still aren't quite right, it's mainly anything that was yellow is now brown.
