Sigh... I don't think this resolves the problem. We reinstalled from scratch and now
the box work. We are also using straight IP's (e.g. 192.168.0.1) as this is a
mini-network for ISDN dial-in that has two Polycom Videoteleconference devices running
IP and 2 RH8.0 servers running FTP. All of the attempts we have tried so far have
been using IP all on the local 192.168.0.0 class C private address. Further on my
home network when I upgraded to RH8.0 I cannot now see my other computer (which acts
as my gateway), even though a simple re-boot into RH7.3 on another partition does work
on the network. In all cases I have not messed with resolv.conf. Ray

Sounds like a combination of one or two of the following. Your dns server
designation is wrong and/or your /etc/resolv.conf is not correctly constructed.
For example a resolv.conf of:

search CS.Trinity.Edu tucc.trinity.edu engr.trinity.edu chem.trinity.edu
nameserver 131.194.131.168
nameserver 131.194.151.1

Will allow you to type micro and reach micro.CS.Trinity.Edu or
micro.tucc.trinity.edu, etc.
