Thanks for your advice.

It only worked at
1# e2fsck  /dev/hda1

and then

2# e2fsck  /dev/hda2

answering several questions with 'YES' and rebooted the PC.  Problem gone

(Remark:  also tried  'e2fsck'  without success)
At the 1# prompt, try `e2fsck /` or if you know your root partition number, `e2fsck /dev/hda21` (or whatever it is).
