Mutt: thread mode line chars in term window

Mutt seems to have lost the ability to use the line drawing characters in
its threaded mode when run in a terminal emulator.  I'm using rxvt with a
7x14 font and have tried both

env LC_ALL=en_US mutt

and

env LC_ALL=C mutt

but no luck.  I've also tried xterm.  On the other hand, slrn seems to have
no trouble using the line drawing characters in the same environment.
Anyone have any luck with this?
