I used it successfully with RedHat 7.3 running either the distro-provided kernel or my own custom-built 2.4.19 kernel.
Assuming that you are using something like Sony's USB Memory Stick Reader/Writer (MSAC-US1), then all I did was plug it in, and then I mounted it, and it worked. The trick is to know what /dev/xxx device it maps to. In many cases, it'll be /dev/hdc or /dev/sdc, as the USB memory stick uses off-the-shelf SCSI device over USB support in the kernel. YMMV.
