Weird things happen. I had a machine at an Installfest that would freeze at 13% formatting the filesystem for ext3. 6 tries, no go. Anyway, I knew it was at 13% because I checked the consoles during the install, and watching as it hanged. This is done the same way you would normally switch to/from the console. Ctrl-Alt-F2 etc etc.. This might give more info on what is happening right before the system hangs. There are several consoles with different types of messages.
