Thanks, Chris. I never thought to check the output. I just figured it was "broke" and moved on. And I also didn't think about the possibility that VESA was limited in terms of resolution and color depth. In retrospect, that would certainly make sense, given the timeframe that VESA was a popular way of running a video card...
