The problem happens in make modules when it gets to here:
make -C block modules

The full list of errors from the compilation is very formidable, but the
first two errors are probably all I need to solve.
Line 9 of spinlock.h says:
extern int printk(const char * fmt, ...)
__attribute__ ((format (printf, 1, 2)));
But, if I run the above gcc command with just the preprocessor, I get the
following junk:
extern int printk_R_ver_str(1b7d4074)(const char * fmt, ...)
__attribute__ ((format (printf, 1, 2)));
It looks like the printk is blowing up wrong. Can someone, anyone, *please
help me here? This is a fresh install and for the life of my I can't
imagine why I'm getting this kind of problem. I have not heard of anyone
else having this. :-(
Thanks guys. I appreciate the help.
