The LVS (LinuxVirtualServer) project does just that.. it allows you to do most types of load balancing, can do persistent sessions, and when combined with heartbeat or some other server monitoring tool, allso does high-availability (add & remove servers on the fly). Combine LVS with a good iptables firewall script, and you have a top notch solution..
