cdroms and dvdroms are alike enough from the os' point of view that they are treated the same.... Btw what kind of gericom laptop do you have? If it's anything like mine (http://people.redhat.com/arjanv/laptop) could you try the bat_gericom module to see if that adds battery status for you ?
