Compaq Armade 3500

This laptop locks up hard when X starts, to the point where I have to 
remove the power cord and the battery.  RedHat exhibited this behaviour on 
versions 7.2 and 7.3 also.  I'm wondering if anyone had pointers to 
resolve this dilemma.  Thanks
