dear all,
i've just downloaded the iso's, burned the cd's and
installed it on a dual-boot system. it looks absolutely gorgeous!!! well done to
red hat. i like the integration of the gnome and kde menus...... it looks very
nice and feels much more complete. however i have encountered a few problems
that i hope someone will be able to help me with.
i've never had problems recompiling my kernel
before but this time i seem to be getting a large number of errors with the
modules. during "make modules" and "make modules_install" i get a warning regarding certain file lengths and names??? i
get reports that it is being concenecated??? anyone else experienced strange errors like this?
i don't actually know what's wrong with my modules........... none of them will
install. modprobe and insmod \* do not work
either!!!
and then, having edited /etc/grub.conf (to adjust
for my recompiled kernel), and rebooting, it wouldn't. i got a kernel panic. i
fixed it but i had to specify root=/dev/hda5 as opposed to
root=LABEL=/ i
used to just copy and paste the paragraph from grub.conf and just change the
kernel it points to. that worked fine under 7.3
also, i can't find many of the applets in rh 7.3
(for example, the rhn applet, the xmms applet etc).
and one last thing, xmms doesn't seem to play files
of my ntfs partition (it did in 7.3 - i have mounted my ntfs partition as
read-only).
i'm not exactly a newbie, but i'm not exactly a pro
either........ if this mail isn't clear, i'll repost. looking forward to your
replies. if you can help, it would be much appreciated. i don't know whether
these errors are my lack of knowledge or bugs that someone needs to be made
aware of.
regards,
andrew.
