Bob,
Probably some of the OpenGL screeensavers are causing the crash.
For immediate relief, set a single screensaver (don't let xscreensaver
cycle through the list). You can use xscreensaver-demo to do this.
You can also use xscreensaver-demo to manually cycle through the
screensavers to confirm this is the problem.
I've got this happening on any multiscreen (matrox) machines with GLX
support enabled in /etc/X11/XF86Config. My solution has been to comment
out these lines in /etc/X11/XF86Config:
# Load "GLcore" # OpenGL support
# Load "glx" # OpenGL X protocol interface
# Load "v4l" # Video4Linux
Then the OpenGL stuff can't crash the Xserver.
Hope this helps,

This is not consistent. It seems to happen perhaps half the time. The
other half, my session stays the same and I see the screensaver running
when I return to the office.

I found these messages upon checking the log:

Anyone else getting these having this problem? I'm using an ATI Radeon
9000 card with a small color monitor, the generic variety sold by
eMachines. The keyboard is an eMachines keyboard also. The mouse is an
old Microsoft 3 button mouse. I'm still working on the box itself, which
I built from parts. When I'm done transferring more cards (like the
Adaptec SCSI card) and testing them, I'll connect the box to my much
bigger 19" Dell monitor.
Thanks
