here are the rough steps for preparing the SSL related bit of the build
environment for OSX:

$ brew install pkg-config cmake
$ brew install openssl # this will install a keg-only openssl
\# (cmake finds openssl through pkg-config so link that in manually)
$ ln -s $(brew ls openssl | grep /lib/pkgconfig/) /usr/local/lib/pkgconfig/
