Jeff, I think I understand what you are saying, and while I never realized it before, I think that it has been happening to me also.
When I generate gerbers (do an F9) I always have to answer a "do you want to overwrite" message of some kind, pretaining to some file(s) somewhere, which I never could understand, and always ignore and simply answer "Y" to, since I always do an "export" of all of the resultant newley generated files to a seperate directory. I always wondered what I was overwriting, but if I understand you correctly, I am continually overwriting my own Project X, even though I am now up to project ZZZ. Never thought that one thru before, but I only hope I never need to access project X files anymore (even If I could figure out which project that really was). I'll have to pay close attention the next time I generate gerbers or other cam files.
