Thats why I typed that Ted. :) I am pretty sure the other things I need to run are OK in a 64 bit environment, although I need to check on a poker package. :) Thankfully I don't have any legacy stuff to contend with. If not there is always VM's, which is part of the reason I am looking at going with W7Pro. I haven't had VFP on my personal systems for 2+ years, but Now that I am writing more Fox code than .NET code I need to make sure it works on whatever I buy.
Stephen made a VERY valid point about memory. HP allows you to purchase 4GB with one or two chips. Getting 4GB in one chip costs more now, but in the future I could add another 4GB chip and save money in the long run. I could also go smaller on the HD and look at 8GB now, 500GB is a lot and I do have several external USB drives I can use to store things I am not currently using but want to have handy. ls -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Ted Roche Sent: Tuesday, August 24, 2010 7:51 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [NF] - Buying a Developers notebook (REVSITIED) On Tue, Aug 24, 2010 at 10:32 AM, Lou Syracuse <[email protected]> wrote: > Does VFP have any issues running in W7/64bit? Snide remarks? Who can resist that invitation! 64-bit lets you use all 4 Gb of memory directly. With 32-bit, each OS is limited to 3Gb, but has it's own means of pretending to use more memory, using PAE or other stuff. It's better than the old LIMS Extended/Expanded memory games, but shouldn't be necessary. We're running VFP7 at one client site who's just updated to Win7/64 and haven't seen any problems. However, another client who's using some "legacy" 32-bit apps (Nuance's Omniform, among others, EOL'd at version 5) has had troubles using legacy 32-bit ODBC drivers (for MySQL). Installation and configuration of the 32-bit ODBC drivers is possible, but the access to the 32-bit interface took a few Google searches to find. So, VFP might be okay, and other apps could cause problems. -- Ted Roche Ted Roche & Associates, LLC http://www.tedroche.com [excessive quoting removed by server] _______________________________________________ Post Messages to: [email protected] Subscription Maintenance: http://leafe.com/mailman/listinfo/profox OT-free version of this list: http://leafe.com/mailman/listinfo/profoxtech Searchable Archive: http://leafe.com/archives/search/profox This message: http://leafe.com/archives/byMID/profox/042e01cb43a1$f5be82d0$e13b88...@com ** All postings, unless explicitly stated otherwise, are the opinions of the author, and do not constitute legal or medical advice.
