I wouldn't say that it actually is required for XP SP3 and Windows 7,
but your average user sees all these TV news reports about malware
threats, half-understands the AV advertising and throws whatever seems
to be winning the features arms-race at the time at the problem.

C'mon, remember the days when a new Dell was loaded with every piece of
crap shovelware going? Did all that add to the user experience? Norton
obviously do very sweet deals for manufacturers.
