        Ah, I misunderstood. I thought that you were working directly with the 
.po files.

        I guess I would version the master .pot file, and after generating a 
new version with the changes, check the diffs to find what has changed. Perhaps 
use that diff to manually run a script to make the substitutions I mentioned 
earlier.
