That worked.  The link you provide was a little dated, (eg Thunderbird 
2).  I'm running  Thunderbird 3.0.1.

Setting up Tunderbird to connect to my gmail account was trival.  I just 
selected to create a new account.  Then a dialog appeared where I 
entered my gmail user name, password, and email address.  Thunderbird 
then probed gmail and set everything up with a connection over SSL/TLS 
with port 465 for the incoming emails and port 993, I believe, for 
outgoing mail.
