I agree about TrueCrypt, it's pretty good.

For backups I use a batch file that uses 7zip with encryption switched
on.  We backup to 2.5inch portable hard drives.  I'm not sure how
strong the 7zip algorithm is, but in the if someone left a drive on a
train this will stop most people.  It's only stuff like source code.
