Users get confused because they are forced to know what the difference
between a Word document, and open office document and a PDF file is. As far
as the user is concernced they have documents they can edit, and those they
can't edit. In all cases they want to be able to print, view and email them.
They couldn't care less what document type a document is and what
application is necessary to open it. And they shouldn't need to care.

I know that Linux users are different, but that's why they are Linux users
and the majority of computer user uses Windows.
