Now divide that $12k by our combined state and federal income tax rate substracted from 100%, and you have what it really cost me back then, as it was a personal expense - not business along with the respective writeoff... Back then my combined tax rate was likely 30%, so $12,000 / .7 would be about $17k in today's dollars (assuming your $12k figure is accurate). But, that amount did include IBM DOS! Of course, the power cable for the PC was n additional item to purchase, it did not come with the PC. My first nickel-and-dime computer experience, May 1984.
