The system I used first (1977) didn't even have a monitor!  Everything was
done using teletypes connected to the mainframe by an acoustic coupler which
made playing Star Trek (the only game available) very interesting but at
least it gave you time to think!  The first computer I owned was a Sinclair
ZX81 with a wobbly 16k RAM pack, a cassette player as storage and a TV for a
display - happy days!
