Ken,

I opted for an inexpensive approach. I registered my domain name with
GoDaddy.com for nine year for a total of $64.80.
My domain name is hosted on GoDaddy's server. Their system allows me
complete control of my DNS configuration.
My A (Host) record forwards www. requests to a canned site for a product
I sell with my specific identity.
My MX (Mail eXchange) records point to a series of google Email servers
supplied by google.
My NS (Name Server) records point to GoDaddy's domain name servers.

The detail of exactly how I became a google Partner is fuzzy right now
but I need to setup several more clients in the next week or two so I
will be figuring it out again. The advantages of this approach include:
  No cost
A searchable web based Email store
Excellent spam control (In my experience)
Webmail access as well as downloads to any POP3 client
Access via MAPI clients as well (I have no experience with this.)

I can post the Google partner info later if it would be helpful.
