Kristyne:

&& Bob,
&&
&& There are some things that you can't really mentally prepare for, even
&& when
&& you've been told about it over and over again over a period of years.
&& It has
&& to be strange for a president to suddenly have people bugging him in
&& the
&& bedroom, following him into the men's room, following his kids into
&& every
&& place they go, watching his wife, and all of the things that go into
&& maintaining security for a critical person in the country.
&&
&& I know I don't like to be watched while I do certain things. I'd want
&& to get
&& away too.

I understand this on one level and am even somewhat sympathetic. I hate the
modern media, and this kind of non-stop intrusiveness makes more of the men
and women who serve than ought to be made. They are, at the end of the day,
just people.

Nevertheless, it's now part of the job, and Obama wanted the job, and he got
it. I find it disconcerting that a guy who is supposed to be so much more
intelligent, wise, able-to-leap-tall-buildings-in-a-single-bound than the
current occupant is already starting to show wear and tear in the public
limelight, while Bush, for all his faults, after the last 5 years of
constant criticism, assault on his character, maligning of his motives, and
ridicule of his personal mannerisms and gaffes, manages to be civil,
courteous and even optimistic in the face of deep public rejection. Obama is
all the rage, and he's already fatigued!

I don't remember these kinds of stories about President-Elect Bush, or
President-Elect Clinton, or President-Elect anybody before. And I don't
think Bush was spared any amount public limelight after his controversial
first election, 9/11, etc.

- Bob
