If I understand you correctly, you simply need to create a Report 
Variable in the Report, set  the calculation type to COUNT, and for your 
purposes, reset the value based on report.  Set the value to store to 
one, then initialize it (I can never remember if it's to zero or one, 
but a few seconds experimentation will show you.)
