I haven't tried this in 8, but in the old days, if the graphic is a BMP, we needed a .msk (mask) file to accompany it.
To create a .msk file: - open the button graphic in your favourite graphics program - invert the colours - save it with the same name, but use a .msk extension Be sure to "clear resources" to test.
