Hi Malcolm, sometime a memory contacts are rusted. Yes a contacts are gold-plated but this gold is a "technical gold" so a gold percentage is about 5% :-) Try to remove memory from PC, take a gum eraser and slightly "erase" contacts on both sides. After it wipe off a contacts by some natural textile. Good candidate is your jeans :-) This textile MUST NOT be any synthetic material (silon, nylon etc.) because these synthetic materials generate static electricity. Please take care that PC is unpluged from power socket before you remove memory modules.
