I did the same thing with my HP TX1000.  Most of the features worked 
with Ubuntu out of the box, but some things still don't work with XP. 
The laptop was designed for Vista and came with Vista and some of the 
drivers are not available for XP.  I often wondered how Ubuntu had the 
drivers but XP does not.

On my desktop I only installed Ubuntu and am running XP and (will run) 
Vista (for testing) in Virtual Box.

I might note that the level of support from the Linux community is 
tremendous whenever I have encountered a problem.
