Below is what firefox on my Fedora 8 is showing, and videos on
metacafe.com seem to play just fine:

It could be some config problem in your Ubuntu beyond flash;
Below is a link that I use to complete my install of Fedora 8. Before
implementing the tips and tricks, which can easily be copied and pasted
into a command line, very little worked in the way of audio/video.
After installing all the relevant plugins, just about everything worked
including playing CD movies.
