I hired my divorce attorney in 1983 with only a small retainer. I think divorce attorneys have gotten smarter over time, but I think they still let some folks off the hook when it comes to paying bills in advance. My brother has been paying attorneys fees at $350/hr in advance for his custody case with his ex-girlfriend. Most of us mere mortals pay in advance.
