Al, With my problem I could in fact ping "myself" but it seemed to be something in the switch that was not set properly. As I said, the clincher was when on the particular ports when I disconnected and reconnected the cable and the status light stayed off even though the PC could access the network.
It was only selected ports on the switch that were "faulty" and disconnecting/reconnecting a cable in an adjacent port worked as expected. Can that machine ping itself. That would prove the switch eh? I am the sysadmin. The rest of the machines on the network could ping each other. Just the one machine wouldn't reply even though it could ping other machines. I took a break and thought things through. I have pretty well convinced myself that the switch itself was causing the problem. I planned to substitute a 4 port switch after I came back from my break but by that time the problem had resolved itself or at least gone into hiding. I turned the Windows Firewall on the problem machine back on and everything still works. I think I should get another 16 port switch. Having a spare available should be enough to scare the problem into staying hidden! - Joe [excessive quoting removed by server] _______________________________________________ Post Messages to: [email protected] Subscription Maintenance: http://leafe.com/mailman/listinfo/profox OT-free version of this list: http://leafe.com/mailman/listinfo/profoxtech Searchable Archive: http://leafe.com/archives/search/profox This message: http://leafe.com/archives/byMID/profox/[EMAIL PROTECTED] ** All postings, unless explicitly stated otherwise, are the opinions of the author, and do not constitute legal or medical advice.
