There are some problems with the hybrid:

1) The hybrid is not an effective all purpose vehicle. It's best use
is for getting around town, but I wouldn't want to try and make a trip
across the country in one.

2) Hybrids are two expensive for what they deliver making a petrol or
natural gas vehicle an overall better value.

3) Hybrids are two complex; because, they use two separate engine
systems that must be integrated together.

4) Hybrids are two light for any kind of work, like pulling a boat to
the lake, or hauling trash to the city dump, for example.

I don't think any of the major auto makers have any long term plans for
the hybrid.

Below are a couple of reviews on the new VW sportwagen. If I were
considering buying a new sportwagen, I would certainly wait until later
this summer when the TDI diesel engine become an option. Also, the last
link is about an old boy that converted his 2002 TDI to run on cooking
oil, which is becoming a more attractive option everyday.
