I have been an AOL hater for years, starting at a high level of true hatred with the advent of v-9. Seems all Windows PCs are made quite unstable with that version, whereas previous versions were merely goofy, and only somewhat unstable. I know this first-hand as my wife, my mother and mother-in-law all run AOL. They have done so since Windows 95 days. And every new version was slower and more bloated than the previous versions, with little apparent benefit.
I noticed that back in 1997 a couple using AOL was trying to light up an EarthLink account, as AOL connectivity really sucked back then (Dial-Up in Eau Claire, WI). When they tried to hit the EarthLink site it was "frozen". But, when I lit up Navigator I was able to hit it fine - which told me AOL was filtering out access to potentially competitive service providers. From that point I began to really despise AOL and its underhanded tactics. But it really was not until v-9 that I noticed a really horrible turn for the worse with AOL's application, with constant lockups of its application, and slowing down of Windows (2000 Pro, XP). My mother never really griped about it, she would just shut down AOL and sometime reboot the PC before reloading it into memory. My wife learned to do the same. My mother-in-law, on the other hand, would call and tell me how her PC is all fouled up, and she is ready to go out and buy another one. She was using, over the years, 2 different PCs I had built, nice machines, so since they were not store bought PCs it had to be my fault the PCs did not run well (AOL was her main application). I finally purchased a Compaq, kick ass PC for her about 2 years ago, and installed AOL v-9 on it. It also had issues with AOL, but at least she did not feel it was anything I had done. Meantime, her older PCs were running just fine as production PCs for me <g>... Least December she had enough of the crap and decided a Mac was the way to go. We purchased an iMac20 for her, and she loved it until we installed AOL for Mac. It was less unstable, but the interface was not quite the same as with the PC (I told her that was going to be the case) - therefore the Mac was not any good either. Just the other day she told me she is about to throw the Mac out the window. I asked why and she told me any time she is in a new eMail she created, and the AIL Instant Messenger windows is open, and one of her "Buddies" comes on-line, the eMail she was creating vanishes upon the Buddy On-Line alert firing off. I told her it was an AOL problem, not the Mac, at which point she asked what I could do to fix her Mac so it stopped doing that. "Stop using AOL", I told her. That did not set well. "But I love my AOL. There is something wrong with the Mac and I am going to call to get it fixed." "Call who?", I asked. "Call Apple", she replied. So I told her Apple was going to tell her they are not responsible for 3rd party software, and would suggest she start using the Mac Mail and Apple messenger service. Clearly, based on her response, I am dead wrong and really do not know what I am talking about. So once again I am walking away from the matter until she comes back to tell me she needs my help. By the way, Lynda (wife) has been telling the same thing, and advises she is having the same problem with her iMac20 AOL app. But to no avail. What can I say? I hate what AOL has done to warp her thinking. I never should have installed it for her. Oh, she refuses to use the aol.com site instead of the AOL app, as the web site is not as nice looking. Amazing. Meantime, she has gone from all Windows PCs are awful, and Apple is great, to Apple is awful and I ought to get a new Windows (Vista) PC - all because of AOL problems. If you really feel compelled to use AOL's services, go with their web site. It is "less bad" than their app. My two cents. Oh, did I tell you how much I hate AOL?
