Ken, Sorry about the bad news. The drive doesn’t need to be the same maker or size as the raid will automatically reduce the size the to lowest required, so if your drives are each say 120Gb and you insert a 200Gb drive it will downsize to 120Gb only.
The most important thing to do is get the same speed disk though as the speed of the array will reflect the slowest of the drives if you are using raid 5 and a swappable disks then ensure the disks themselves are hot swappable or you risk destroying the whole array - been there, done that! I'm not conversant with the Fastrack controller as we us Sagitta but most controllers operate in similar ways. It does seem from the message though that you haven't got a hot swappable raid - hence the powerdown request. In my opinion it is always worth sourcing a couple of duplicate drives when installing the array as the fateful day that you need them is inevitably going to happen. Best of luck on your rebuild. Hey - -- -- - - -- One of the wonderful little surprises that greeted me coming home from vacation was that my server raid software is reporting a pending failure. Specifically: - the Box is W2K server, fully SP'ed - the utility reporting it is Promise Technology "FactCheck" monitoring utility - the disks are Maxtor 120 gb, IDE's (4g120j6) - the RAID controller is "MBFastTrak 133 Lite (5275)" - the utility says that one of them is "critical; failure predicted" - when I boot the machine, it tells me to power down and replace the disk. I am perusing the manufacturer's web site as we "speak," but in the meanwhile: people who are better at the hardware end than me: Questions: - Do I have to replace it with exactly the same model? A quick search finds few new ones, mostly refurbs as i would expect with a 3-4 year old drive. - Better to start over with 2 new drives? - Other/better questions I should be asking, but don't know enough to do?
