Yes, I suspect the USA was involved in it. The USA had invested upwards of 100 billion dollars to aid Pervez Musharraf in the war on terror. Things started getting dicey when there was wide spread rumors of voting fraud during Musharraf's reelection. Rather than let it go to the Pakistan Supreme Court, Musharraf declared a state of emergency, and canned all justices that were not loyal to him, including the Chief Justice. Condi Rice began talking about a power sharing arrangement between Musharraf and Bhutto, which might have allow the USA to maintain ties with their close Allie Musharraf, but the parties never came to terms. About a month of so before Bhutto's assassination, John Negroponte was sent over to Pakistan to meet with Musharraf. Boy, would I have like to be a fly on the wall during those discussions.
