Hi Peter, I think this must have been a screw-up somewhere but I can't identify where conclusively, probably the 2008 version of the Millennium bug <g>. I had Google Desktop but removed it as it was causing problems a few weeks ago. I bit the bullet in the end and restored to an image which fixed the problem but lost some settings which I'll have to reset. Thanks to all for advice, it's comforting to know I'm not the only one that has these problems :-)
