My favorite editors at the moment are Notepad++ (http://notepad-plus.sourceforge.net/uk/site.htm) and Emacs (http://www.gnu.org/software/emacs/) I don't bother firing up Emacs as often, but I do use it all the time for writing Lilypond scores -- it has a nice editing mode for that.
