        Marriage is an always has been about inheritance. Rules regarding  
marrying virgins, sexual fidelity, etc., have existed simply to  
ensure that family bloodlines could be assured. Remember, this pre- 
dates DNA testing, so the only way to be sure that the the child your  
wife carries is yours is by making sure you're the only one who has  
had sex with her.

        Religions have co-opted all of the major events of life for their  
own purposes. Nearly all cultures have celebrations for birth, death  
and marriage, and many also have ceremonies marking puberty. These  
practices pre-date any religion, and to claim that marriage is  
essentially a religious function is backwards. Next you'll be  
claiming that Easter has religious origins.
